Choosing the sewing machine for you shouldn’t be a hasty decision. It’s easy to fall prey to the 17 stitch sewing machine because it’s inexpensive. However, before you go out and purchase something cheap just cause it seems affordable, take a moment and really evaluate your sewing needs.
Do you want to sew a lot of things (clothing, costumes, stretch fabric, upholstery or drapery? quilts?). Do you want to sew a lot of clothes? Or more quilts? Or, are you just going to hem a few pairs of pants? There are a lot of really good machines that cost more than $100 but less than $500 that, if you want to do more than hem pants, you would probably be better off getting.
